Tesla Model 3 has overtaken the Xiaomi SU7 in China EV sales, breaking a months-long streak for the Chinese brand’s sedan.
Insurance data shows Tesla registered 14,000 vehicles in the week of August 11 to 17, with the Model 3 alone accounting for 5,200 units.
Xiaomi SU7 registrations stood at 3,600 during the same week.
The result points to renewed competition in China EV sales as Tesla prepares to deliver a refreshed Model 3.

Tesla Model 3 edges past Xiaomi
The Tesla Model 3 last outsold the Xiaomi SU7 in January, making the latest figures a significant shift in the rivalry.
Tesla’s combined 14,000 sales in China last week also included 8,800 registrations for the Model Y, which remained the country’s best-selling electric SUV.
Both the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are built at the Shanghai Gigafactory, which continues to anchor Tesla’s output in Asia.
Tesla’s overall sales for the first six weeks of the quarter were 60.3 percent higher than in the second quarter, although slightly down year on year by 2.1 percent.

The company has sold more than 340,000 vehicles in China so far this year, 5.9 percent fewer than in 2024.
Despite that dip, the Tesla Model 3’s latest weekly performance shows it remains central to EV sales in China.
The new version of the Tesla Model 3 is expected to help sustain demand.
It is rated at 830 kilometers, or 515 miles, under the CTLC cycle.
The starting price is 269,500 yuan, about $37,500, with deliveries set to begin in September.
New Model Y L joins the lineup
Tesla is also launching the Model Y L, a six-seat SUV scheduled to reach buyers in September.
Priced from 339,000 yuan, or about $46,700, it enters the three-row SUV segment where Li Auto and Onvo have already placed new contenders.
Xiaomi is still facing production challenges with the Xiaomi SU7.
Delivery times now stretch to nearly 59 weeks as demand outpaces supply.

The company’s second model, introduced in June, is priced below the updated Model Y but has yet to reach large-scale production.
Tesla finished the week in third place among new energy vehicle brands in China, behind BYD and Geely Galaxy.
Even so, the Tesla Model 3’s win over the Xiaomi SU7 shows it can still command weekly sales in a crowded field.
With the Shanghai Gigafactory supporting both the Model 3 and Model Y, and with new products arriving, Tesla has a chance to build on its momentum in the final months of the year.
