The famous DeLorean name is back after over 40 years, but you are going to need a crypto budget in order to reserve the new Alpha5 EV.

DeLorean’s first and only car was produced in the 1980s, which was the DMC-12 sports car, made famous in the Back to the Future franchise.

Now, the new Alpha5 EV is ready to reserve. But you are going to have to pay for that reservation with cryptocurrency.

That could be enough to put a lot of people off from reserving what should be a very exciting electric car.

The electric sports car is available to reserve for $2,500.

But that is $2,500 in cryptocurrency, rather than American dollars.

The revived company has also launched something called the ‘DeLorean marketplace‘.

This is where customers can buy and sell the build slots for the new electric car.

That makes the ordering process for the new Alpha 5 sound very complicated, and needlessly so.

DeLorean itself has said that it wants to set ‘a new standard for the automotive industry’ with this innovative ordering method.

But the real explanation might be more straightforward than that.

When DeLorean revealed the Alpha 5 in 2022, NFTs were much more of a commodity than they are now.

This new pre-ordering method sounds as if it is a hangover from that 2022 launch.

Paying the $2,500 in crypto secures you an NFT that you use to secure your spot in the ordering queue for the car.

To do this, you have to set up a Slush wallet, which is kind of like digital bank that holds the cryptocurrency.

What makes the process even more confusing is that you can sell your spot in the ordering line.

But the initial $2,500 deposit is non-refundable.

At the time of writing, there are fewer than 600 reservations for the DeLorean Alpha5.

That is not ideal from the company’s standpoint.

But it’s still unclear as to when the EV will hit the roads.

The Alpha5 itself will cost at least $150,000, with it expected to have over 300 miles of range.

It will be fast too, with DeLorean stating it can sprint from 0-60mph in just three seconds.
