The new Tesla Model Y is proving to be a big hit in China, with the electric car flying off the shelves.

Initial reports suggested demand for the new all-electric crossover dipped after the initial hype.

However, reports now suggest that demand for the new version of the EV is still high and that the initial slump looks to be well and truly over.

A Tesla model selling well will come as some relief to the company, with sales dropping massively in the past couple of months.

Tesla Model Y sales in China

Initially, it was believed sales were slowing down due to a drop in registrations for the Model Y in April 2025.

However, much of that was down to the Giga Shanghai factory allocating much of its output to other countries.

The factory is a global producer of EVs and isn’t just producing them for the Chinese market.

Data from those following the market showed that registrations in China did drop as Q1 ended and Q2 began.

At the time, Tesla was exporting plenty of Model Ys across the globe.

But following that dip, registrations began to pick up.

The new EV is proving to be a big hit

In the week ending April 27th, Model Y registrations picked up by a massive 77.5 percent

That quashed any worries about falling sales.

This huge rise in registrations strongly suggested the company was allocating more of its vehicles to the Chinese Domestic Market than it was.

Chinese Tesla watcher @GeekLaii on X recently paid a visit to the company’s delivery center on Crab Island in Beijing.

During his visit, he discovered new Model Ys filled the center.

As said in the video, the vast majority of these are for the domestic market.

Tesla itself has confirmed that the Model Y was the best-selling SUV in China in the first quarter of 2025.

Despite initial worries, it looks like the EV is continuing to do well in China.

That proved that it was worth Tesla introducing an all-new version.
