We all love a good day out, maybe to a museum, an automotive event… or even to one of the weirdest attractions you can find in the United States.
Fortunately, for those who like the weird and wonderful, you’re in luck.
There are some truly outrageous things to visit by the roadside in America.
Whether you want a car-based tribute to the UK’s Stonehenge or a museum full of bad art, there’s something for everyone, and these are some of the best.

Carhenge is Nebraska’s contribution to the weirdest roadside attraction
Located in Alliance, Nebraska, Carhenge is an automotive tribute to the ancient stone formation known as Stonehenge in the United Kingdom.
Artist Jim Reinders created the quirky tribute in 1987. It utilizes various old cars mounted in a replica of the famous stone circle.
Cars are stacked on top of each other, with others sticking up vertically from the hood or trunk.
As for its weirdness, it’s certainly up there when it comes to strange roadside attractions.
The International Banana Museum is as weird as it sounds
Take a trip to Mecca, California, and you’ll see what is easily one of the weirdest museums in the world.
Welcome to The International Banana Museum.
The collection is home to over 20,000 items related to bananas and holds the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of banana memorabilia.

If you really like bananas, this place is for you. If bananas scare you in any way, it’s best to drive right past it.
The Museum of Bad Art in Massachusetts
Somerville, Massachusetts is home to possibly one of the best-named museums in the United States.
Of course, bad art is at the center of The Museum of Bad Art, which is dedicated to creative work that’s so awful it’s almost good.
The museum was founded in 1994, and regularly rotates the artwork on display to give visitors a varied look at the world of poor artwork.
The World’s Largest Ball of Twine might be the weirdest of them all
Perhaps the weirdest of all the attractions on this list is located in Cawker City, Kansas.
This is The World’s Largest Ball of Twine, and it’s precisely what it sounds like.

It is, in fact, a giant ball of twine, and every year, the ‘museum‘ holds a twine-a-thon, allowing visitors to add strands to the ball.
It has a wonderful sense of community, although it’s probably not the main reason people visit Cawker City.
The World’s Largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Versions of the World’s Largest Things
There isn’t much that we can add to that heading.
This unusual museum, located in Lucas, Kansas, was created by artist Erika Nelson in 2006.
It, of course, hosts a collection of miniaturized versions of giant roadside attractions.
The museum is actually quite clever. It’s a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the American obsession with having the ‘world’s largest‘ of a particular thing.
Whichever one of these strange places in the United States you visit, you’re guaranteed to be left puzzled – and entertained – by the experience.
It’s one of the reasons we love this country as much as we do!
