This incredible camper with mahogany interior was made from abandoned bread truck

This incredible camper, complete with a smart-looking mahogany interior, began life as a bread truck more than 70 years ago. 

The 1953 Grumman Curbside has been lovingly converted into a tiny mobile home by its owner, a US-based enthusiast called Hunter. 

Although you might not know from looking at it, the poor camper actually spent 50-years exposed to the elements.

Thankfully, it ended up in Hunter’s hands and he quickly set about giving it a new lease of life – completely transforming it.

The former bread truck was in a bad state

We love a good camper conversion at Supercar Blondie, such as this man who converted a private jet formerly belonging to Elvis Presley into an RV, and this one is a great example. 

When Hunter got the truck, it had no glass, frame or even a floor – so sorting that out was his first job. 

He crafted a tube chassis for the three-meter (10ft) wheelbase and fitted dual rear wheels in the back; he also popped in a Ford E-350 suspension and a 7.3-liter Powerstroke V8 diesel engine.

The truck’s exterior was given an overhaul, with the broken glass replaced and the roof and original aluminum panels restored. 

The camper was transformed inside as well as out

Inside, Hunter went all out with mahogany panels – and it looks absolutely amazing giving the compact space a chic look. 

He opted for an open layout, meaning the driver’s cabin – which is kitted out in more mahogany – isn’t separate from the living area, which makes the whole thing look more spacious. 

The original seats have been swapped out for Cadillac CTS leather seats and he’s added a splash of tech with a touchscreen display and new sound system. 

The small-but-perfectly-formed vehicle even has its own bathroom with an overhead shower; and a seating area that can be converted into a bed for guests by simply pilling out a wooden frame and rearranging the cushions on top. Smart, right?

The onboard kitchen has just about everything you’d need to keep yourself fed, including a microwave, butcher block countertop, and a copper sink. 

There’s also plenty of storage throughout the whole vehicle, including three overhead cupboards in the kitchen. 

To the back of the camper lies the main bed.

When not in use for sleeping, the bed can be converted into what looks like a couple of extra counters with storage space – but they can be flipped out and connected to make a bedframe, which is then topped with the cushions and – ta-dah – you’re ready for bed.

Think of it as a ‘bread’ and breakfast on wheels.
