If, like many other drivers, you find yourself wanting a dashcam for extra security on the road, you don’t need to fork out $100, as one app can transform your old iPod Touch into a fully functioning recorder.
A dashcam is quickly becoming a must-have feature in any car.
Its recordings have been integral in insurance claims, police reports, and serve as a deterrent for theft.
But if you’ve found yourself struggling to afford one, you can now dig out your old phones or an iPod Touch and get a free cam, thanks to a simple app.

How to turn an old iPod Touch into a dashcam
With dashcam recordings now being so important, settling roadside debates and educating drivers, anything with a camera is now being turned into these security-boosting devices.
Whether it’s weird phones from the Stone Age, AKA the Noughties, or the iPod Touch, this app now gives your old devices a very important second mission.
DashCam Recorder, a free-to-use app, appears to be everything you need and more, with 4K resolution, GPS coordinates, speed, date, and time integration, and a Driver Focus Mode that turns off the display.
Linked to iCloud or other hardware, the recordings automatically save to your drive.
It’s then automatically deleted after the storage fills up, although its built-in crash sensor prevents any needed footage from being wiped.

As highlighted by MUO, the app is compatible with all camera devices linked to the Apple App Store and is powered by iOS, which means the iPod Touch also works.
Although you might be better off with a newer mobile with a better camera, the iPod Touch actually works great as a dashcam, as its huge storage allowance allows you to keep weeks of footage.
However, there are some downsides. The fact that it isn’t hard-wired into the car means you won’t get recordings when the car is switched off. Also, having an iPod or iPhone on display is a quick advert for a smashed window.
Still, for a budget buy, it might just save you a lot of stress and money.
“Two months later, I am still using it every day. You’ve probably got an old phone somewhere. This might be the best use for it,” MUO journalist Jonathon Jachura said.
Dashcams dish out some spooky footage
Be prepared to see some rather unusual sights on the dashcam, though.
Not only are they good for recording scary road incidents, but people have reported that the cameras pick up ghosts.
And unlike the car censors, these paranormal sightings are caught on camera.
Still, if you get an iPod Touch working as a dashcam, that sounds spooky enough.

If you have an old phone or iPod lying around, this is a no-brainer when it comes to safety.
