A US driver has just issued a warning after he spotted a sticker on the card reader as he went to pay for his gas.

Michael Arterburn, a content creator who regularly posts safety tips online, shared a clip from the driver with his followers.

In the original video, the man had gone up to pay with his credit card after filling up with gas.

He found a sticker had been plastered over the card machine, in what is an all too common scam.

The sticker on card reader scam is frighteningly common

When it comes to pumping gas, we’re all used to a certain routine.

We drive in, fill up, head in to pay, and maybe pick up a snack along the way.

But with card readers out at gas pumps these days, most people don’t even have to venture inside to pay the cashier.

While this is convenient, it has given rise to some scams from criminals trying to take your hard-earned cash.

You may recall that card skimming was being attempted at gas stations.

Now, new warnings are being issued about another underhanded tactic.

In a video reshared by Michael Arterburn, the driver filmed a sticker that had been placed over the card reader at a gas station.

The sticker appeared to be a standard ‘tap-to-pay’ symbol.

But it wasn’t the real deal, as peeling back the sticker revealed the genuine article beneath it.

“They trying to get your info. Look out for this,” the man warned.

Want to avoid getting your info stolen by a scammer? Here’s what you need to look out for.

For a start, a legitimate card reader will have a light on it, while a fake won’t.

The symbol’s orientation will also face right on a real sticker, whilst the fake one might face off to the left.

If in doubt, pull gently on the face plate of the card reader.

If it feels loose or starts to peel off a bit, that’s a red flag that it’s been tampered with.

And don’t think that this is just some niche problem either – the FBI estimated that $1 billion is lost a year thanks to gas pump skimming.

Gas stations are a hub for scams

In recent months, there have been a ton of news stories about card skimmers being removed by authorities, whether in Virginia or Maryland.

With so many stories like this doing the rounds on social media, it’s no wonder that so many Gen Z drivers are scared of pumping gas by themselves.

But ultimately, going to the gas station is an inevitable part of driving an ICE vehicle.

And gas stations aren’t all bad.

One social media star caused a ruckus in Arizona when he told drivers to get free gas on him when he put down a $10,000 tab.

And then there’s the world’s largest gas station, which one man was left in awe of when he visited.

So really, gas stations should be safe places to visit to get your gas.

But in this day and age, it can’t hurt to be vigilant.
