An American YouTuber best-known for his eccentric videos, engineering anything from mini houses to flying leaf blowers, is now trying his hand at a spot of fishing by restoring a lobster boat.

In May 2023, he announced via a YouTube video that he had purchased a 31 BHM Downeast Lobster Boat.

He has been renovating it with a new purpose: to become a ‘Science Boat’ for his YouTube channel.

Despite many challenges, the boat is now seaworthy, even if it doesn’t have any living space.

Restoring it wouldn’t be easy

The Downeast lobster boat, described by YouTuber Peter Sripol as ‘crusty’, was in bad shape, including having several large holes in the stern which were worryingly close to the waterline.

A vessel that had a lot more to offer was this abandoned casino ship, that was found with everything on board.

Back to the lobster boat, to rectify these problems, he blocked the holes with chunks of G-10, a hybrid material composed of epoxy resin and woven fibreglass.

This material is very expensive so he worried about the steadily climbing price of the trawler’s DIY renovation.

Not only was he using expensive equipment to repair the boat, he also created a lot of parts from scratch using 3D printing.

He printed a jig for a custom exhaust, in order to keep the fibreglass boat from overheating.

He also welded the boat’s transom door so that it stopped the boat from filling up with water and made access easier.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a rusty boat restoration project like this, someone else actually managed to turn a shipwreck into a gamer’s paradise.

This particular restoration project was far from smooth sailing.

One of the challenges he faced included poor curing on the deck resin when it was exposed to the sunlight.

The boat also had no living space due to Sripol’s prioritization of mechanical functionality, meaning a lot of the space was used for equipment.

Despite the obstacles, the ‘Krusty Lobster Boat’ set off on its maiden voyage to great success.

While the 31 BHM Downeast Lobster Boat renovation was incredibly expensive, no one can deny that the final product is shrimply the best – unlike the man who had to abandon a $2 million cruise ship renovation project.
