Volkswagen has taken the top spot in Europe EV sales for 2025, outpacing Tesla sales and strengthening its role in the broader EV market.

The company reported 347,900 electric vehicle deliveries across Europe in the first half of the year, marking an 89 percent increase from 2024.

By contrast, Tesla’s global sales fell by 14 percent during the same period, with Europe no longer its stronghold.

The shift highlights changing dynamics in the EV market as buyers turn toward a wider range of established brands.

Volkswagen’s Growth Pushes Tesla Out of Lead in Europe

Just two years ago, Tesla held a commanding position in the European EV market.

Its Model Y was a bestseller, and rivals like Volkswagen were scaling back production due to weak demand.

Fast forward to mid-2025, and the numbers tell a different story.

Volkswagen electric sales have surged past expectations, while Tesla sales have lost momentum.

Volkswagen’s group-wide EV sales reached 465,500 globally, but the sharpest gains came from Europe.

According to industry data, the core VW brand delivered 122,600 EVs in the region between January and May alone.

In that same window, Tesla sold just 76,400 units. VW outsold Tesla in nearly every month, with April showing the widest gap.

A key factor behind this growth was strong performance across multiple brands within the Volkswagen Group.

Škoda’s EV deliveries more than doubled year-on-year.

Cupra also saw a sharp increase, and Porsche tripled its EV output compared to the same period in 2024.

While incentives and price cuts helped boost some of these figures, the shift in Europe EV sales suggests consumer preferences are moving beyond early front-runners like Tesla.

Volkswagen electric sales were also supported by a broader product lineup and wider availability across European markets.

Although the company acknowledged that margins are still below target, executives said electric models remain profitable.

Europe EV Sales Highlight VW’s Strategy

The strength of Volkswagen’s performance in Europe contrasts with mixed results in other regions.

In China, EV sales dropped by over 30 percent. In the U.S., the company saw modest growth, but volume remained limited.

Even with the gains in Europe EV sales, global competition remains intense.

Tesla sales have fallen across key markets, giving rivals a window to gain ground.

Brands from China and South Korea are expanding in Europe with competitively priced EVs, putting pressure on both Tesla and Volkswagen electric strategies.

Volkswagen’s next wave of EVs, including the compact ID.2 and sporty Cupra Raval, is scheduled to arrive in 2026.

These models are expected to improve affordability and appeal to new buyers in the EV market.

At the same time, premium offerings from Porsche and Audi continue to draw attention, helping the group maintain momentum across different price points.

The numbers from the first half of 2025 reflect a clear shift.

Volkswagen electric deliveries have outpaced Tesla sales, and the company now leads in Europe EV sales by a significant margin.

Whether that lead holds will depend on how both brands adapt to the next phase of the EV market.
