This woman surprised her boyfriend with a truck similar to the one he drove in high school, but then the worst thing happened.

Tyler Hoover’s dad bought him a Dodge Dakota back in 2001, and he drove it around for the next four years.

Fast forward to the present day, and his girlfriend, April, decided to bring a similar model – the 2003 Dodge Dakota – into his life.

However, the sweet moment was soured shortly afterward in a cruel twist of fate.

This wasn’t the high school reunion they had in mind

Being reunited with a car from your past is always a nice feeling.

We’ve seen it enough times to know the effect it can have; it’s not uncommon for someone to shed a few tears.

Just recently, we saw a son who reunited his dad with a racecar he’d sold 50 years ago, and another man who was reunited with his Pontiac Firebird after 25 years.

In fact, Dodge Darts seemed to be quite a common car in this category.

One man managed to track down a 1970 Dart from his high school days, while another man was reunited with his 1967 model six months after it was stolen.

Unfortunately, today’s reunion wasn’t be in quite the same league of tearjerker or heart warmer.

The intentions were there, though, and that’s what matters, right?

At any rate, Tyler had asked his girlfriend, April, if he could buy the 2003 Dart when he saw it for sale.

April said no for financial reasons, but then began feeling regretful about her veto.

So, a few months later, she sprung a surprise on her boyfriend and bought it herself.

The gesture was sweet, but the truck wasn’t.

A Burger King bag had been left in the truck for 15 years, so it smelled awful inside.

The guys working on the truck initially thought bed bugs were the culprit, but maggots turned out to be the most likely cause of the stink.

Ew.

But once the foul smell was dealt with, it was clear there were other minor issues present in the truck.

April added ‘Dakota Sport’ decals to the vehicle, helping it resemble the vehicle Tyler owned back in the day.

Now it was time for the big reveal – but how would it go?

How disaster struck when this woman surprised her boyfriend with a truck

After parking up the truck in the garage, April led Tyler out with his eyes closed.

Classic new car surprise.

“I know how much you loved your old Dakota and that you really wanted [that truck you saw],” April said.

“Bob said he sold it…it’s fine, I’ll find another one,” Tyler cut in.

That was the perfect set-up for April.

“He sold it…to me,” she replied.

At this point, she spun him around and he got his first look at his new car.

To say that Tyler was ecstatic about his gift would be an understatement.

Under the lights of their garage, this Dart looked brand new – you would never have thought a Burger King had spent nearly two decades rotting inside.

But when it came time to do a test drive, things didn’t go so smoothly.

Tyler decided to drive the truck up to his old high school and childhood home.

But, after recreating a photo from his earlier years, the truck started to overheat.

Tyler suspected that a ‘bad head gasket’ might be the cause.

Hopefully it can be fixed and April’s sweet gesture for her boyfriend wouldn’t go up in smoke.
