Ever been in a swimming competition with a shark and realized you can’t win? Well, now you can, as YouTube engineers CPSdrone are creating the world’s fastest underwater jetpack to solve ‘humanity’s shark problem’.

Of course, only a handful of people in the world would ever need a device to outpace a shark, but these guys are trying to keep your toes away from the teeth of a great white.

How? Well, knowing that the fastest these gnarly aqua mammals can swim is around 25mph, you’ll need a device that can cut through the water at greater speeds.

So, let us introduce the engineers at CPSdrone, a company creating an underwater jetpack that vows to be the fastest ever made and will be able to out-swim a shark.

Fastest underwater jetpack promises to swim faster than sharks

Inherently, jetpacks are supposed to make us fly.

But if you can glide through the air, why not through the water?

Well, people have begun to take this idea and swim with it, and underwater jetpacks are starting to crop up on the market for deep-sea enthusiasts.

CPSdrone is now trying to go above and beyond anything else out there, and a recent YouTube upload showcased the first episode of the fastest underwater jetpack build.

Simplistically, the design will see two thrusters flank a streamlined body that will be strapped onto a swimmer’s back and power them through the water at unparalleled speeds.

The team, known for the development of small, bespoke submarines, used 3D printers to create the exterior while using pipework and watertight electronics to operate a battery ’90 times more powerful than their normal Li-ion’.

With a four-speed transmission, the underwater jetpack showed a lot of promise, but as it kicked into its highest mode, issues arose.

But is it really a jetpack?

While the first prototype seemed to work, its functionality appeared to be somewhat flawed.

Proving difficult to steer, given that the motor almost always pointed upwards and drove its pilot deeper into the water, it seems like there is a reason nobody has been able to make the underwater jetpack stick.

Instead, the glider, or scooter, model appears to be a more appropriate design – and it’s why supercar brands are making their own.

“When it comes to our safety, the scooter has a big benefit,” the YouTubers said.

“You can simply dismount by letting go.”

Still, the team is hoping to find a safer way of making the fastest underwater jetpack and continue to add more power and safety in upcoming uploads.

Watch out, sharks, we’re coming to play tag with you soon.
