This McLaren F1 mechanic is one of a kind
We’ve all no doubt been in the unfortunate situation where a car’s battery has died, leaving the car unable to start.
Whilst many of us know the way to get it running is by using jump cables, the actual method can sometimes be confusing.

Don’t fear, though, as a qualified mechanic has explained how to jump-start a car.
Road & Track spoke to Kevin Hines, the only mechanic trusted to work on the McLaren F1 car.
Hines is a McLaren Special Operations (MSO) trained Senior Technician and works in Philadelphia, so who better to offer advice than the wizard of the car himself?

This is how to jump-start a car the right way
The first solution may not be apt for every scenario, but nevertheless, it is still useful.
“My first choice would be to use a battery charger if you were in a situation with a dead battery,” said Hines.

Although ideal, not everyone will carry a battery charger or be in a place with one, so Hines has a second option, too.
He says that he always carries a jumper pack.
“They work, they’re really incredible. It’s like a tiny little box of magic,” he revealed.
Plus, not only will they help you, but they can also help others.
Here’s what to do if jump cables are the option
The first thing you should do is make sure the batteries don’t have any physical damage.
Next, you should check the cables are in good shape before using them, and then ensure both cars are shut off.
Now, it’s time to connect them in the proper order.

Firstly, take one positive lead and connect it to the positive terminal of the battery that’s dead.
Then, you should take the other side of that cable that’s positive and do the same, but to the battery that works.
Following this, you should get the negative cable and connect it to the negative end of the working battery, before the leftover negative lead is hooked to a ‘ground point of the dead car’, or even the negative battery end, if all else fails.
Once all connections are secured, you should start up the good car and let it run for around 15 to 20 minutes, allowing the alternator to charge it up.
Hopefully, the dead battery is now running again, but it’s not over yet.
Next, you should disconnect the wires in the opposite connecting order to make sure no shocks are given out.
“I’d disconnect [the wires] as soon as you get it started,” Hines concluded.
So there you have it – here is your fool-proof guide on how to jump-start a car.
