Packed with a V6 that echoes the roar of a 1973 legend, the new 2026 BMW M2 Turbo Design Edition has revived the 2002 Turbo vibe and brought it into the modern day in spectacular fashion.

BMW is rich in history, and picking a lucky dip of its archive pages gives you some tremendous vehicles.

But one of the unsung heroes is the 2002 Turbo, which gave BMW its signature aggressiveness and sass.

Honoring that vehicle, the 2026 BMW M2 Turbo Design Edition is rolling back into 1973 before slamming down on the gas to burst onto the modern Autobahn.

New BMW M2 Turbo Design Edition is a 473hp race-ready beauty

The 2026 BMW M2 series was announced earlier this year, as the Supercar Blondie team was among the first to smash the throttle.

Primed with a beastly 3-liter M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder engine, the car sounds like something you’d hear in Formula 1, being rough and ready to race.

But the German company has now unveiled the BMW M2 Turbo Design Edition, taking the base car and driving it through decades of paintwork archives.

The 2026 BMW M2 comes with an Alpine white paint job and a blacked-out hood that reads ‘Turbo’; you don’t need to know what’s underneath to know that it’s ready to rumble.

The M2 series is so likable that it’s even made Tom Segura learn how to drive stick, and this new special edition is one of the smartest and most appealing yet.

Priced at $82,900, deliveries are planned for Q2 next year.

A token of its past

At the heart of this new beauty is the original 2002 Turbo.

Announced at the 1973 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 2002 Turbo – not named after the year it was released, like modern cars – the car was one of the brand’s most popular vehicles that pioneered their sporty roots.

“The turbo was distinguished from other 2002 models by muscular fender flares that allowed for wider wheels and tires, a black rear spoiler, BMW Motorsport stripes that ran from the front wheel arches down the length of the body, ‘turbo’ badging a the rear, and a large front air dam,” explained BMW.

“That air dam could be optionally fitted with ‘2002 turbo’ graphics – written backwards so they could be read clearly in the rear view mirror of the car being overtaken on the Autobahn.”

This essence is captured in the 2026 BMW M2 Turbo, with the same striped look and aggressive driving style.
