To see how the Tesla Cybertruck performs its primary duty, one California man has conducted a tow test and uncovered some potential range issues.

First and foremost, the Tesla Cybertruck is a pickup truck.

The futuristic sci-fi heavy-duty vehicle has already been proven to be ridiculously fast and powerful, but as an EV, fears have crept in about its range.

So, one man has conducted a three-pronged range test to see the best practice for towing around California.

Tesla Cybertruck put through its paces in California tow test

From the get-go, the Tesla Cybertruck had pickup fans salivating.

But lately, the massive towing machine has been placed under the microscope for its range, as some heavier loads have seen a massive drop-off of its range.

So to try and figure out the most efficient towing methods for the Cybertruck, this California man has been doing laps of the state with the big EV.

The man recorded three attempts at the same route. One without a tow, a second with a plastic Scamp trailer, and a third with a metal PolyDrops trailer.

The original lap held an average of 316 kw/h throughout the trip, showing its baseline.

With the Scamp, it struggled to hold anything below 457 kw/h, which is a significant increase, shortening the range by over a third.

However, the metallic PolyDrops trailer is metal, like the Cybreturck, built with an aerodynamic design and benefits from solar power.

With this trailer, the Cybertruck was much more efficient in the tow test.

The third route saw it record 408 kw/h, saving a tonne of energy in comparison to the other load.

While this was also a reflection of the trailer equipment than it was on the Cybertruck towing performance, it’s clear to see that using metallic and solar-powered trailers helps keep this EV locked and loaded for longer trips.

Still, the Cybertruck isn’t the most efficient towing vehicle in the world and has often been outclassed in this department in comparison to the likes of a RAM 2500.
