These risk takers wanted to see what happened when a car ran on 100 percent oxygen and zero percent fuel, and discovered something surprising.
The YouTube channel Garage 54 wanted to push the boundaries of what cars could do.
They decided to pump pure oxygen into the intake manifold of a naturally aspirated car engine to see how it’d react.
While they speculated it could boost the power output, they had no idea what would actually happen.

What happened when this YouTuber ran a car on pure oxygen
Upon introducing the oxygen, the engine’s rev count increased without pressing the gas pedal, indicating more efficient or aggressive combustion.
A baseline acceleration run was done using normal air; then a second run was performed with extra oxygen introduced during intake.
The second run showed an improved time – the baseline run to get from zero to 100km/h was 12.6 seconds.

On the second time around, half a second had been shaved off.
But that’s where the improvements ended.
On subsequent runs, deterioration started to creep in.
Third time around, the transmission was struggling, the revs were giving out, and the engine was misfiring.
As cylinders began dying, the team realized they may have killed the car.
However, when they opened up the hood, they realized things weren’t as apocalyptic as they may have envisioned.

The pistons were only mildly damaged, and everything else looked fine, AutoEvolution reported.
This led Garage 54 to one conclusion – the ECU was struggling and pulling fuel in an attempt to keep going.
What conclusion did this experiment lead them to?
Every drive after that was a struggle, as the engine was making some very unpleasant noises.
Sure, the exhaust smelled cleaner, but was it really worth it?
In conclusion, it was decided that while oxygen injection can boost performance momentarily, its effect doesn’t last very long.

The presenter told viewers:
“We don’t recommend you try this.”
Enough said, right?
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Garage 54 carry out a risky experiment – they previously drove cars over speed bumps at high speeds.
You could say the channel has a knack for outlandish experiments, as this supersized Lada drifting with two engines demonstrated.
