Dodge CEO Matt McAlear has dropped hints that Stellantis could develop a new sports car for less than $30,000.

McAlear has expressed his view that there is a case for a new affordable sports car in the American company’s range.

The CEO even suggested there was a possibility of a top-range model and one that is more entry-level.

The news comes as Dodge is set to put the new version of the Charger into production, with one member of the range being the first fully electric muscle car in the US.

A possibility of two Dodge Halo cars

McAclear has made his thoughts on any new sports car/supercar very loud and clear.

“I think there’s a market for two things. There’s a market for an entry-level halo and a top-of-the-line halo,” he told The Drive.

Following criticism of its electric Charger Daytona, McAclear has even suggested that the Charger may have a V8 again in the future.

Back to the new sports car, and launching one under $30,000 would be a significant coup for Stellantis and Dodge.

Currently, there are no sports cars available for under $30k in the USA.

The closest is the Mazda Miata MX-5, which costs just over $30,000 once destination fees are included.

A high-end sports car is also in the offering

Remarkably, the Stellantis brand could introduce another performance car at the higher end of the scale.

Hinting at this, McAclear said, ‘we need to get original, like the Viper’.

“It’s gotta come to market and be unique and different and Dodge. Not a Corvette fighter, not a Mustang fighter,” he said.

Could that mean the Dodge Viper might make a comeback?

It’s way too early to say that, and McAclear may simply be teasing us to get us excited.

It would appear, though, that things are changing slightly at Stellantis.

A sub-$30k sports car in America would be a real boost for enthusiasts and potentially a big rival to the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86.
