Elon Musk is blaming ‘fun police’ for having to recall 500,000 Teslas because of the ‘fart horn’.
The automaker is recalling more than 500,000 vehicles in the U.S. (578,607 to be exact) due to the ‘Boombox’, an Easter Egg/April’s Fool feature which has been available since 2020.
The Boombox is the feature which allows drivers to play amusing sounds including fart noises and bleating goats outside the vehicle.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Boombox feature “may hinder pedestrians’ ability to hear a mandatory warning sound, increasing the risk of a crash”.
There’s no engine noise in EVs, obviously, and that’s why these vehicles are required by law to be fitted with a system that makes artificial noise to warn pedestrians.
Tesla said it would release a firmware update to disable the ‘Boombox’ feature.
Musk took to Twitter to make the announcement and in traditional Musk-esque fashion, he blamed the recall on the “fun police”.
The affected vehicles are the 2020-2022 Model S, Model X, Model Y and 2017-2022 Model 3.
If your car has the feature, you will soon receive an email about the recall.
Alternatively, you can always check the NHTSA website for more info.
Personally, I think the ‘fun police’ have gone a bit too far with this one, what do you reckon?
