Tesla boss Elon Musk has hailed the Cybertruck the carmaker’s ‘best ever’ EV, despite its lackluster sales performance this year.
The divisive truck was officially unveiled to the public back in 2019 and quickly garnered plenty of attention.
But it wasn’t a smooth run for the EV.
Tesla initially said it would go into production in 2021 and opened up reservations, but the EV was hit with several delays and didn’t begin rolling off the production line until 2023.

Tesla boss Elon Musk has praised the Cybertruck
Its multiple delays were just the start of the bumpy road the Cybertruck would drive.
Prior to its launch, Musk predicted Tesla might sell as many as 250,000 units of the truck each year.

But things haven’t quite worked out like that just yet.
Despite grabbing headlines and pulling in an initial flurry of interest, sales of the truck haven’t exactly soared.
In 2024, the EV’s first full year of sales, the carmaker sold just under 40,000 units, according to Forbes.
And this year, sales have slumped.
In the second quarter of 2025, sales of the truck totaled 4,306 units.
Amid all of this, Tesla also decided to shelve the most affordable model, the $69,990 Long Range option, and raised the price of the most expensive Cyberbeast version from $99,990 to $114,990 by including a non-optional ‘Luxe Package’.
Nonetheless, Musk is still proud of the Cybertruck and recently heaped praise on the controversial vehicle over on X.
Musk shared a post from the official Cybertruck X account and added his own message.

“The Cybertruck is an incredible vehicle,” he wrote.
“Our best ever from Tesla.”
What’s behind the EV’s falling sales?
There are several factors that have likely contributed to the Cybertruck’s poor sales.
Firstly, its love-it-or-hate-it futuristic design wasn’t to everyone’s taste.
Alongside that, at its unveiling, Musk said the Cybertruck would come with a starting price of just $39,900.
However, by the time the truck went into production, this had jumped to $60,990 and later rose again to $69,990.

Earlier this year, the carmaker killed off the Long Range model, meaning the cheapest model you can currently get your hands on costs $79,990.
Alongside this, more brands have increased their EV offerings in recent years, with the likes of the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian RT1 providing some serious competition for Tesla.
