This Florida woman owes over $100,000 in fines.

And it is because her tire touched the grass on her own driveway.

It really is quite a remarkable story.

And the US state has even denied the woman’s appeal.

Florida woman fined for parking on her own driveway

Okay, so this story is pretty much as crazy as it sounds.

And it comes to us from the US state of Florida.

The Sunshine State tends to feature pretty prominently in the car industry.

But we’re not sure if it’s ever been in the news for this reason.

Sandy Martinez is the Florida woman in question.

She currently lives in Lantana, Florida, with her sister, son, and daughter.

All four members of the household own a car.

But their house/neighbourhood doesn’t have any street parking.

Because of this, the Martinez family has to line up their cars across the driveway.

Due to the lack of space, however, one of the cars has to park slightly over the grass.

Bear in mind – this grass is located on Ms Martinez’ yard.

Unfortunately, this technically violates a local property-maintenance ordinance.

And it has led to a daily $250 fine every day since 2021.

This means that Sandy Martinez has accrued more than $100,000 in parking fines.

The court won’t hear the issue

Naturally, Ms Martinez was less than thrilled with the situation.

“Cities shouldn’t be allowed to wreck lives over trivial violations,” she said to CBS 12 News.

As of right now, Martinez owes the city of Lantana more than $165,000.

And even worse, the US Supreme Court refused to hear her case.

The Institute for Justice heard the story and got involved.

“Six-figure fines for parking on your own property are shocking,” said attorney Ari Bargil.

“The court’s refusal to hear Sandy’s case is a disservice to all Floridians.”

We hope that Sandy Martinez is able to find a resolution to her issue.
