Ford is auctioning off a rare 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition, from its Heritage Fleet, meaning someone can snap up a piece of automotive history, and it’s all for a good cause.

The Ford GT began life as a concept vehicle before going into production in 2004.

Only 4,038 first-generation GTs were ever made, but the Heritage Edition was rarer again, with Ford creating fewer than 350 examples.

And now, one of them – the third one ever to be built – is going under the hammer.

The 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition is as rare as they come

The Ford GT Heritage Edition is instantly recognizable thanks to its Gulf Oil-inspired livery.

The livery is a tribute to the Ford GT40 Mk I’s back-to-back wins at the 1968 and 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Although the exterior features head-turning paintwork and livery, the interiors were finished to a minimalist design that was focused entirely on driver engagement.

Under the hood, you’ll find a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 that produces 550 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque.

Ford created just 343 of the Heritage Edition models, making each one a collector’s piece.

And if you’ve always fancied getting your hands on one, then now could be the time, because Ford has recently announced that it will be selling the 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition No. 3.

While any Ford GT Heritage Edition is rare, this one is extra special as it’s the third ever built and the earliest example that’s ever been sold to the public.

A listing for the car from auctioneer Barrett-Jackson reveals that it’s got 8,435 miles on the clock and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Proceeds from the sale will go to support the care and maintenance of Ford’s Heritage Fleet.

The Ford Heritage Fleet is packed with icons

Back in March, Ford announced its Heritage Fleet – a collection of almost 500 historically significant vehicles from across the carmaker’s life time.

The fleet includes a mix of production vehicles, concept cars, and special anniversary models, like the one millionth Mustang ever made.

As you might have guessed, there are plenty of performance vehicles including a 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and a Ford GT Mk II.

There’s also rarer non-production gems, like a Ford SVT Lightning Bolt Ranger concept truck and the 2007 Ford Interceptor concept.

And the lucky winner who is able to snap up the 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition.
