Ford built a supercar so hardcore, it was too wild to be driven on the streets

  • Ford has long endured as, perhaps, America’s most iconic car brand
  • The Michigan motor company also built one of the best supercars ever made
  • One modern tribute is so wild that it can’t be driven on the streets

By now, you are probably familiar with Ford and the automaker’s legendary work.

The Blue Oval is responsible for some of the world’s most famous cars.

But one model in particular is perhaps the most iconic sports car ever built.

And Ford made such a hardcore supercar inspired by it, that it wasn’t road-legal.

Ford GT takes aim at Europe’s elite

In the 1960s, Ferrari ruled the roost in the car world.

Enzo Ferrari and co. dominated almost everything that they were involved in.

After a well-documented, ugly relationship, Henry Ford II wanted to stick it to Ferrari.

So he decided to build a car that would become a legend among legends.

At which point, the factory got to work on building the now-iconic GT40 to show up Ferrari on the world’s biggest stage.

It would ultimately boil down to Michigan versus Maranello at the 24 hours of Le Mans.

After legendary car maker Carroll Shelby got his hands on it, the Ford was ready.

Powered by a 4.7-liter V8, it would sweep Le Mans in 1966, securing a legendary 1-2-3 finish.

Ford finally smashed Ferrari’s stranglehold on the automotive world; history was made.

GT supercar illegal on the roads

In 2005, Ford released the road-going GT supercar – which was massively praised.

The second generation was announced in 2016, and was equally beloved.

However, the company decided to take the second-generation GT and make it a track monster.

2023 saw the release of a truly special version – the Ford GT Mk IV.

In truth, the only similarity the GT Mk IV has with the others is the name.

Beneath the skin, this supercar savage is powered by a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V6.

The larger turbochargers and the limited-slip differential produce more than 800HP.

This masterclass power unit is housed in an all carbon-fiber, “Long Tail” body.

Ford Performance global director, Mark Rushbrook, offered his thoughts on this supercar.

“The original GT Mk IV held nothing back…and the new Ford GT Mk IV brings it in the same way.

“The Mk IV is the ultimate send-off of the third-generation supercar,” he said.

Honestly, we couldn’t agree more.

With a top speed of over 216MPH, it’s the ultimate send-off to one of the greatest cars ever.
