The 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle is a special and iconic car in its own right.
But this particular Chevy comes with a very special back story of its own.
That is because this is a home-built junkyard rescue muscle car.
And it has evolved from a once-$1,200 junkyard find to a 500hp racer.

Iconic muscle car saved from the crusher for $1,200
There’s just something special about a car that has literally been built and restored from the ground up.
But it is made even more special when it is a restoration of an American muscle car icon.
The story behind this beautiful, 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle comes to us from AutotopiaLA.
It turns out that this Chevelle example doesn’t exactly come with a normal story.
As a matter of fact, it was very nearly destined for the crusher at the junkyard.

Thankfully, its current owner rescued the Chevelle from the junkyard for just $1,200.
And the owner has spent the subsequent 25 years faithfully restoring it piece by piece.
Far from being shiny and sparkling, this example focuses purely on functionality.
It reflects two-and-a-half decades of trial, error and hard work all done by hand.
1967 Chevrolet Chevelle drives like the wind
Powering this iconic 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle is a hand-built, hand worked-on powerplant.
It happens to be a 468cu-in, big-block V8, paired with a Muncie M22 four-speed manual gearbox.
The chassis has also been substantially developed and tweaked, with a stronger box frame from an El Camino.
It rides on fat, 315-width tires that are mounted on custom, 18in steel wheels.

The interior of this 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle further reflects the functional focus of the car.
Inside, one finds a set of simple instrument gauges and worn-out panels.
The owner explains that his restored, 500hp Chevelle has raced in several autocross events.
It has even raced against several Porsche club members in the past, often being just a few seconds behind.
For a junkyard save that weighs over 3,800lbs, that is seriously impressive going.
