The Hyundai Crater concept car recently made its debut at AutoMobility LA 2025, and it takes adventuring to a whole new level.
The rugged-looking SUV concept is designed for off-road and inspired by ‘extreme environments’.
With the Crater, Hyundai says it explores the ‘next evolution’ of its XRT, but this time it’s tougher and more capable than ever before.
As well as being crammed full of everything you’d need for an off-road adventure, the concept also has some hidden gems, including a tow bar that doubles as a bottle opener.

The Hyundai Crater concept is ready for an adventure
While many concept cars lean heavily into futuristic looks and technology, like the Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR or the all-electric Cadillac Elevated Velocity, the Hyundai Crater concept car is clearly built with adventure in mind.
The concept car’s exterior design theme is ‘the impact of adventure’, with a bold silhouette, wide skid plate, a utility-case-inspired rocker panel, and a roof platform that can be mounted with additional lighting and plenty of room for storage.

The Crater comes with 18-inch hexagonal faceted wheels that were ‘inspired by envisioning a hexagonal asteroid impacting a sheer metal landscape’, and are wrapped in some super-sized 33-inch off-road tires.
“Crater began with a question: ‘What does freedom look like?’ This vehicle stands as our answer,” Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design SangYup Lee said.
“It is a vision shaped by our unending drive to explore — to inspire our customers to explore deeper and embrace the impact of adventure.”
The carmaker has also included some neat hidden elements to the car’s exterior, including a tow bar that does double duty as a bottle opener, and removable side mirror cameras that are also flashlights.
Climb into the concept and you’ll find a huge roll-cage and wraparound seats
Inside the Hyundai Crater concept car, you’ll find plenty of tech, including a dynamic Heads-Up Display and a completely customizable interface, and some big and bold wraparound seats finished in black leather with vibrant orange accents.
With adventure at the heart of the concept, it’s no surprise that a large and functional roll-cage completely outlines the Crater’s cabin, while along the dashboard, there’s a crash pad shaped like a bent metal sheet and strewn with tiny holes to allow ambient lighting to filter through.

Much like the exterior, there are also some adventure-inspired small touches stashed away inside, including a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
The squared-off steering wheel has been given a central position with terrain-mode buttons, including Snow, Sand, and Mud, to match the driving mode to your location.
All in all, it’s the ideal companion for your next off-road adventure.
