Jeff Bezos still drove an incredibly humble $2,000 car while he was running Amazon.

When you hear Bezos’ name, you probably think of wealth and a lavish lifestyle.

But years after becoming a billionaire, he was still driving a 1997 Honda Accord.

And his reasons for doing so were surprisingly straightforward.

How the CEO of Amazon drove a $2,000 car for years

Jeff Bezos is one of the richest men in the world, and has been repeatedly linked to cars throughout the years.

But for years, he had a shockingly modest car.

He isn’t the only big earner to have opted for this route – the CEO of Koenigsegg drives in a Toyota hatchback.

Athletes like Steph Curry and Jalen Hurts have also taken people by surprise with their humble approaches to car buying.

For Bezos, a 1997 Honda Accord was his car of choice for many years.

He was driving it as recently as 2013, according to Brad Stone’s book The Everything Store.

Bearing in mind, that same year Bezos’ net worth was estimated to be $25 billion and he ranked 19th on Forbes’ list of billionaires.

His car of choice first became apparent back in 1999 when he was profiled on the news show 60 Minutes.

“This is a perfectly good car,” he replied when asked why he drove an Accord by journalist Bob Simon.

Amazon was five years old at that point, and Bezos had a net worth of $8 billion.

Things were much more down-to-earth at the time, with the CEO working at a desk made from a wooden door and 4x4s.

When asked why his working conditions weren’t more high-end, he had a great answer.

“It’s a symbol of spending money on things that matter to customers,” he said.

The future of cars, as envisioned by Jeff Bezos

Things are looking a little more extravagant for Bezos these days – just take a look at his $4.8M Koenigsegg if you don’t believe us.

And it’s not just in his garage that exciting car news is unfolding.

Bezos is backing a Michigan-based EV startup that is making $25k pickups.

And while $25,000 isn’t quite as cheap as the billionaire’s Honda back in the day, it’s still a great deal.
