In a stark contrast to any culture in the world, Los Angeles is rolling out a new pilot scheme by using a sealant formerly popularized by spies to start painting streets white, and it’s all for a good reason.

Typically, it’s the mosaic streets of Santorini, Greece, that are famed for their stunning white paint, reflecting the sun around the hillsides of its mountainous island, just as its many, many infinity pools.

But for a more practical reason than you might expect, Los Angeles is taking a similar approach.

The LA Street Services is painting streets white, and it’s all to do with helping your cars, rather than just looking spectacular.

Los Angeles Services is painting streets white to stop roads from melting your car

In the baking heat, American roads tend to get quite a lot of damage.

It’s why Las Vegas streets have no street paint on them. Instead, they have a different product to separate lanes that doesn’t just melt away in the summer.

In LA, the State is deploying a new technique to stop roads from overheating and causing damage.

By painting the roads white, the asphalt will only absorb around 60 percent of the sun’s heat, compared to the 95 percent that dark grey and black roads do.

This is supposed to bring the temperatures down from the sky-high 130 degrees Fahrenheit of dark roads.

Not only is this supposed to help the health of your cars (particularly the tires), but it also offers animals and pets, such as dogs, a respite from the unbearable floor temperatures.

CoolSeal, which is made by a company called GuardTop, was originally made for military bases to keep aircraft cool, but could soon decorate every street in the State.

The pilot scheme began in 2018 with around 20 blocks being given the white makeover, but it has since begun to spread throughout the city.

Hot countries keep painting their roads different colors

Los Angeles isn’t the only place in the world that is using different paint to solve some major road issues.

Over in Australia, the government has rolled out new schemes to paint their roads, although in quite a different way.

Down under, the major issue on the roads is nighttime safety, with long stretches of asphalt sometimes attracting wildlife that know no better.

So, in a bid to keep the roads safe in some places, a new glow-in-the-dark road paint is beginning to gain traction, immediately distinguishing the difference between road and wilderness for all of its inhabitants.
