A Tesla owner has experienced the worst nightmare of every car owner after checking his vehicle after lightning struck his house – but what should you do with an EV during lightning storms?
The owner posted details of his situation on Reddit after the lightning struck his house and caused havoc with both the car and his charging equipment.
The nightmare has resulted in the car needing to go to a dealership for servicing and repairs.
Some other Tesla owners have mentioned they’ve had the same issues, and others offered advice on how to quickly resolve the problem.

What happened to the Tesla during the storm?
The owner posted images of a fried EV charger on the Reddit post, with a few other issues visible.
Close-up photos show that the charging port itself has been fried, and looks burnt out by the storm.
There are also noticeable breaks in the wires, rendering the recharging system useless.

Comments from the owner state that the Tesla now won’t charge with a mobile charger or at a Supercharger.
That has led to him speculating that the onboard charger has also been fried on the EV.
He has scheduled the Tesla for a service on July 7th, but that is still some time away, considering that it’s likely a daily driver.
Other Reddit users have commented as to how he might be able to get it fixed sooner.
What should you do with an EV during lightning storms?
One said that, as the car is now not usable, he should just drive it to the dealership.
If driven straight to the service bay, the Tesla dealer may work on it much sooner.
That is easier than getting a tow truck involved, and better than waiting for over a week.
Others have said to ensure the car is unplugged during a storm.

It says in the owner’s manual to do this, with fellow owners saying they always do so.
The owner of this EV said that they had a house surge protector, and they thought they would be okay.
As it turned out, that could not have been further from the truth.
It is amazing to see just how much damage the storm appears to have caused.
