This tech lover had a genius idea to power his house and save the environment at the same time, all by using recycled laptop batteries.

The shift to greener power sources has affected many industries, but this new method will blow your mind.

The grand total of cells used amounted to over 1,000 as he eagerly shared updates throughout the power source’s lifespan.

The project initially began almost a decade ago and is still reportedly going strong.

This is how he used recycled laptop batteries like never before

When most of us think about powering our houses, we often opt for grid power or solar panels, this tech enthusiast decided on a DIY approach.

Before we get into it, though, we need to stress that laptop batteries can be dangerous, so please don’t try this at home.

User Globux shared the idea on the Second Life Storage forum page and amazed other users in the process.

“I already produce a part of the electricity that I need.

“I have 1.4 kw of solar panel on the roof, an old 24v 460AH forklift battery, a Victron MPPT 100/50 charge controler, an 24v to 12v Victron voltage lowerer, and a 3KVA Victron inverter,” the user said.

But, there was more to his journey of self-sufficiency, and it all started in his PC.

Yes, that’s right, the same cell used to surf the internet was now set to be used to light up a whole home, and the user even planned to build a shed to house the tens of batteries, charge inverters, and controllers.

When Glubux first started, he had around 650 batteries that he’d collected for a few months before packaging them up.

But things only got bigger and better.

In 2018, the user explained that over 6,300 lithium cells were in use, as well as more than 7kWp of solar panels, with 678 cell holders also in place.

Of course, there was some trial and error, but it eventually worked a treat.

The DIY project was the gift that kept on giving

After impressing with his initial ideas for the power source, the DIY whizz decided to regularly share the progress of his man-made marvel over many months.

In fact, in December 2024, he revealed that his system was still going strong.

“Just a quick update, eight years later everything works fine, I haven’t changed a single cell.

“I replaced my old solar panels with new ones, 440W peak X 24, which is really more comfortable at this time of the year,” the user concluded.

Now, this kind of project isn’t something that can be done off the bat; with hours of research, safety measures, and special expertise needed to enable it to run smoothly.

You have to admit, it is pretty cool though.
