This car enthusiast embarked on an emotional mission to rescue his late grandfather’s old Chevrolet Caprice after it spent three decades abandoned on an island.

The car was bought new in 1995 by YouTuber Captain Crankshaft’s grandfather.

Since then, the Caprice has spent its entire life on Martha’s Vineyard.

Sadly, its owner passed away around 14 years ago, and the car has been pretty much forgotten about ever since.

The Chevrolet Caprice hadn’t moved for years

Time and time again, we see that to some people, cars are so much more than a set of wheels, and we’ve seen the emotional reactions to prove it

And it seems that YouTuber Captain Crankshaft is one such person.

He recently took on a rescue mission to get his late grandfather’s Chevrolet Caprice and bring it home with him.

However, it wasn’t going to be a straightforward operation.

In a clip uploaded to his channel, he explained that before he had even set off, he had no idea if the car would run or not.

Not only that, but he noted that it had never been driven on a highway, and he also suspected that it hadn’t ever been driven faster than 35mph.

Nonetheless, he was determined.

“I have to try because this car means a lot to me,” he said in the clip.

The classic car had been left exposed to the elements for a long time and had acquired a thick coat of grime and mold.

But, somewhat miraculously, when the YouTuber turned the key, the Caprice’s V8 engine started up without hesitation.

Sure, it didn’t exactly sound healthy, but the fact that it still turned over is a solid testament to Chevy’s engineering.

Before setting off on the two-hour journey home, the YouTuber took the Caprice for a test drive, where it performed remarkably well, all things considered.

The Chevy went on an emotional ‘goodbye’ visit to the beach

Despite its age and all those years off the road, the Chevrolet Caprice drove smoothly, and Captain Crankshaft was even able to push it to 50mph.

As well as a functioning engine, the car’s electrics were all in good working order, meaning the YouTuber was able to take it to the beach for an emotional ‘last hurrah’.

“It felt right to bring the wagon back here one last time to the beach,” he said.

“I remember coming to the beach all the time with all my cousins in the back of this car.

“So, it’s a little bittersweet, but I’m happy to be taking the car home.”

With the car now safely home, the YouTuber is planning a restoration to get the Chevy looking good as new.
