YouTuber Marques Brownlee decided to splash a considerable amount on an original iPhone from 2007.
The source was no easy feat, with the device being known to be a tricky item to get hold of due to dishonest sellers and scammers.
First released almost 20 years ago, the iPhone is used by millions of people each day, but it all stemmed from the original design.
With no App Store and a huge sim, the iPhone was truly a time capsule, but after opening up his new toy, the YouTuber was left with a damning realization.

The original iPhone – Here’s what you need to know
First released in 2007, the original iPhone changed the mobile phone world forever.
The 3.5-inch widescreen display with synced photo library abilities meant that a phone was no longer just a device to solely make calls or texts on.

In fact, Apple even described the original iPhone as a ‘widescreen iPod’ thanks to the music player making it a literal traveling boombox, too.
Almost a decade after the release, the iPhone is still going strong and now boasts a mighty 17 generations.
As you can imagine, the device that kicked off Apple’s phone success is now worth an eyewatering amount, and eager to bag one, YouTuber Marques Brownlee tried his luck at an auction.

The 2007 original iPhone is a collector’s item now

Now, we should note that Marqes Brownlee is no rookie when it comes to checking out tech, but after sourcing an original iPhone, there was a hidden shock.
Marques spent a mighty $40,000 on the iPhone, including shipping and tax, with other new original devices amassing more than $60,000.
As the iPhone is so rare, there are many scams surrounding sellers listing used iPhones as new.
This one, however, really did seem like the real deal, with the box even being X-rayed to confirm the contents.

After winning the iPhone in an auction, the YouTuber did a serial number check, which showed the good news that it hadn’t previously been activated or registered.
From the original plastic around the box to the foam in the top, everything seemed positive, even though the ripped packaging meant it was sold at a lower price.
Upon opening the sealed, original iPhone, he found a charger, dock, and wired headphones came as part of the deal, too.
Sitting for 16 years in the same box, though, meant that it didn’t turn on, but after some charging, the phone powered up just fine.
There was a big shock, though
The iPhone’s value significantly dropped after opening the package, as being sealed is often deemed as the most important factor.
“This brand new, pristine iPhone is now worth dramatically less than what I paid for it, and that’s okay.
“Hopefully I don’t regret this,” he concluded.
So, Marques Brownlee spent $40,000 on the 2007 iPhone, but the real cost lies in the open value.
