Before having an auto shop service your car, you should ask one question

One of the biggest expenses car owners face is the yearly auto shop service.

From tires that need replacing to new engine parts, the process can hurt your wallet. Which is why car enthusiasts like to make sure that the auto shop and mechanic they choose have a good reputation.

To help drivers streamline the process of choosing the right person and place for the job, one mechanic shared his top tip of asking one question.

TikTok user and mechanic dillsboro.automot said that there should be one ultimate requirement to check before settling on a mechanic.

“When looking for an automotive repair shop, one of the smartest things you can do is ask if they’re ASE certified,” he explained.

ASE stands for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. And the mechanic explained that in order to achieve the qualification, ‘rigorous’ exams have to be passed and experience must be proven.

“Another thing is that in order to keep these certifications, the technician has to be recertified every so often.

“So that means they have to stay up to date on the changes that keep coming out on these vehicles as they advance and change,” he said.

So, before getting an auto shop service, you should check that they have the ASE certification.

Some gearheads were conflicted by the advice

Online, some drivers weren’t all that convinced by the qualification’s importance.

“ASE means you can read and pass a written test. That’s it. Real-world experience is who I hire. If you’re ASE certified, I won’t hire you,” said one user.

“Just because someone has ASE certificate doesn’t mean that they are a good mechanic just means they know how to take a test,” explained another car enthusiast.

“I own a repair shop and could care less about ASE certs,” said someone else.

Other mechanics have also tried to help fellow auto-enthusiasts out by sharing their expertise.

For example, one veteran mechanic shared the correct way that he thinks you should actually use jack stands.

Plus, we can’t forget the time that one mechanic said that the most reliable car in the world is unglamorous and 20 years old.

You can catch the mechanic explaining his thoughts below.
