This modified Tesla Model S Plaid called ‘Dark Helmet’ moves at lightning speeds despite no major changes to the original car.

The Tesla Model S Plaid is peak straight-line performance, doubling as a vehicle that fits in round mall car parks but rips past supercars in drag races.

It has quickly claimed a reputation as one of the fastest straight-line production cars ever.

But one slightly modified version has blown its competition out of the water, showing just how far the Plaid can be pushed.

Modified Tesla Model S Plaid is lightening around the track

The plain-Jane Tesla Plaid has already smashed the world’s most powerful production sedan in races, adding it to a collection that also includes supercars like the Koenigsegg Agera and pure-muscle Dodge Chargers.

Modified versions of the Model S have also shown their prowess, and now Dark Helmet is here to show how far the Plaid can go.

Modified by Unplugged Performance, Dark Helmet uses the same battery, motors, and battery management system as the typical Tesla Model S Plaid, but adds a bunch of bells and whistles.

With aerodynamics and handling in mind, this car is modified for the track, rather than straight-line racing as Plaids usually excel in.

A massive front wing is front and centre to these changes alongside a huge rear spoiler and diffuser. A carbon fibre body kit has been substituted in and Lexan windows replaced the originals.

Made for racing rather than grocery shopping, the interior has also been stripped away, leaving just the racing seat and a roll cage.

How quick is Dark Helmet?

As showcased by AutoTrader, Dark Helmet is designed for race tracks, so it is tough to compare to usual Plaids that are all about straight-line speed.

However, the YouTube host claimed: “With this car, Unplugged Performance has built an absolute monster. The faster Tesla ever. The fastest car I’ve ever driven.”

There are numbers to back up Dark Helmet’s speed, as it outperformed the Corvette Z06 around the Willow Springs International Raceway track by an impressive 11 seconds (setting a time of 1:20.05).

The EV is actually the fastest car to ever lap the circuit, beating previous records from the Porsche 911 GT2 RS (991) and Dodge Viper ACR (MK V).
