Porsche is building a gas-powered Macan equivalent that’ll be sold alongside the Macan EV.
We don’t know much about it yet, other than the fact it may not even be called the Macan.
But we do know something about the engine.
And it’s unprecedented.

Uncharted territory for Porsche
Like many legacy automakers, Porsche is taking one step forward and two steps back when it comes to EVs.
The company went all in with the Taycan, and then immediately said they would electrify most models, starting from the Macan.
They did that, but they also realized that the Taycan has a depreciation problem, and that people still want internal combustion engines.

As a result, the company announced they’re working on a new model, roughly the same size and scope of the Macan EV, which is still selling well, for the record, but this one won’t be electric.
The problem is that they need engine for that, and they can’t use flat-six units they use for the 911.
But since the German automaker is part of the VW family, it is reportedly considering using Audi-sourced platforms and engines.
But that means potentially means using a… front-wheel-drive platform.
That’s unheard of.
But then again there have been a lot of things we weren’t expecting from supercar makers that now exist.
It wouldn’t be the first time

Even though a front-wheel-drive solution would be a first for Porsche, this wouldn’t be the first time the company does something unprecedented.
Automakers regularly do things they swore they’d never do.
Porsche pioneered luxury SUVs with the Cayenne, which was something so many supercar manufacturers ended up ‘copying’.
They even gave it a diesel engine at some point which, for a Porsche, is unheard of.
So, a front-wheel-drive vehicle, in the big scheme of things, is probably not even that crazy.
