Old American yellow school buses have become a perfect blank canvas for people wanting to get creative with mobile living.

As houses get more and more expensive, many people have been left looking at other options.

Some opt to live out their days in a campervan or an RV, but they can be on the pricey side, too.

So what’s left to do other than buy an old American yellow school bus and turn it into a mobile home?

Old American yellow school buses – the perfect setting for mobile living?

It feels like more and more people are taking the DIY route when it comes to home ownership.

For some US couples, that means making a home of disused American yellow school buses for mobile living purposes.

For Paul and Shae, it cost them $6,000 and three years to turn this bus into their dream mobile home.

And they aren’t the only ones – one YouTuber took on a similar project with a 40-foot school bus, installing luxury decor inside.

Josh and Emily, from South Dakota, are in a similar boat.

Or a similar bus, we guess.

‘Aurora the Adventure Bus’ has become their home after two years of renovations.

It turns out that size isn’t the only thing going for the yellow school buses.

The engines inside them are ideal for long-distance driving, and don’t need too much in terms of upkeep.

Plus, it’s a relatively easy renovation job as far as they go – you’ve got plenty of space, windows, and a flat floor on which to place furniture.

Rip out the cars and hey presto, you’ve got your home laid out in front of you.

Living life on the road – a great adventure for many, a necessity for some

You might be surprised to learn how many Americans live life in a vehicle.

Around 486,000 people live full-time in an RV, which is twice as many as back in 2021, according to survey data from the RV Industry Association.

A separate survey from the Census Bureau found that in 2023, 342,000 people were living in either a van, an RV, or on a boat.

While many people choose this lifestyle, for many it’s a reality of being priced out of the housing market, NBC News noted.

Everybody’s reasons for living mobile are different.

For those in the market for a motorhome, there are some incredible options out there, like this $1.25 million Dembell one that is basically a luxury apartment on wheels.

And don’t forget this upcoming Jayco model that’s the first Class A all-electric RV in the world

But for those with more limited budgets, DIY motorhomes are a great idea, like this old bread truck that has a new life as an RV
