Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people, owns a sizable island in Hawaii, but he’s treated just like any other person on the road.
Not long ago, Ellison was pulled over for speeding on the island of Lānaʻi.
And he eventually got a citation for that.
But there’s a detail about this story that probably explains why this happened.

What happened when Larry Ellison got pulled over on his own island?
Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people (he briefly surpassed Elon Musk to become the world’s richest last year), owns his island in Hawaii.
But even the world’s richest people can’t speed.
And this was proven when he got pulled over on his own island in Hawaii in 2022.
The incident was caught on police body camera footage, showing an officer pulling the tech billionaire over for speeding and failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign.
To his credit, Ellison didn’t pull any ‘I own the island’ cards and simply acknowledged the mistake and said ‘there was no excuse’.
But then the officer discovered something else.

The situation became slightly more awkward when it emerged that Ellison did not have his driver’s license on him at the time of the stop.
The officer treated him like any other motorist, issued a citation, and sent him on his way.
The law’s the law, but it’s still ironic that you should have to explain yourself on your own island.

The likely reason why Larry Ellison got a citation

People, including the media, generally say that Larry Ellison ‘owns the island’ because it’s just easier and quicker to write than ‘he owns 98 percent of the island’.
But that would be more accurate because he doesn’t own 100 percent of it, ‘only’ 98 percent.
This is because two percent of the land (and whatever’s on it, like homes, for example) still belongs to their respective owners, including private home owners, the state, the county, and so on.
This is the reason why the police are there.
If Ellison owned the island in its entirety, he could theoretically close it to the public.
At that point, every road would effectively become his private driveway.
