Claiming to be the first wireless charging technology of its kind in the world, the Porsche Cayenne EV is getting an innovative floor adapter that will power the battery simply by parking over it.
Wires are annoying.
That’s why we ditched the cables in favor of Bluetooth earphones. It’s why gaming controllers no longer come with 20-foot connectors. It’s why landline phones are a distant memory and everyone owns a cellphone.
So, to rid the car industry of annoying cables, the new Porsche Cayenne EV is getting new wireless charging technology that sticks to your floor.

Porsche Cayenne EV now comes with wireless charging pad option for a big buck
Home charging is a huge cost-cutter in the EV landscape, but not everyone has managed to get an adapter installed.
As they become more popular, Porsche is upping the ante.
Today, the German brand announced its new wireless charging technology.
Named the ‘Porsche Wireless Charger’ (PWC), the 11kW charger is a pad that sticks to the floor and creates an electromagnetic field to wirelessly charge the Porsche Cayenne EV.

It works by aligning the car, via a sensor pack installed on the floor of the Cayenne, to the floor pad, which then charges at up to 90 percent efficiency.
The pad is viable inside or out, and withstands all weather conditions from snow to draughts.
There are even sensors to check that the area is clear before firing up the magnetic field, just in case your cat enjoys sleeping under the car.
But it comes at quite a steep price.
According to reports, the floor plate will be around ‘€4,300 plus taxes’, while the charging plate within the car is an additional ‘€1,500 plus taxes’. That works out at $5,003 plus taxes, and $1,745 plus taxes, respectively.
All in all, you can expect to pay around $9,500 for the wireless charging technology in the US.
The future of home charging
Scientists have been working on this tech for quite some time, and it’s likely that we’ll see more brands release similar chargers soon.
Tesla is one of these, after announcing its own wireless pad last year, but has yet to bring it to the market.

But Porsche has beaten everyone to the punch.
“Ease of use, suitability for everyday use, and charging infrastructure are still the decisive factors when it comes to the acceptance of electric mobility,” said Deputy Chairman of Research and Development, Dr. Michael Steiner.
“We are proud that inductive charging will soon be available in series production at Porsche. Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient.”
Currently, only the Porsche Cayenne EV is compatible, but you can wager future electric cars from the brand will also work on the same kit.
