SUVs aren’t usually the stars of racetracks, but the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT just proved it’s no ordinary grocery-getter.

The high-performance beast set a blistering lap time of 2:14.046 around the full Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, making it the fastest production SUV ever to do so.

With racing driver Ramez Azzam behind the wheel, the Cayenne didn’t just turn heads, it turned in a record.

And yes, the lap was officially timed, scrutinized, and sanctioned like a full-on motorsport event.

The 3.281-mile Formula 1 Grand Prix layout is no easy task for a car of this size, but the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT handled it with surprising grace.

While the Porsche Cayenne previously showed its strength by towing an Airbus A380, it is determined to flex its speed too.

The lap took place as part of a new format introduced by the Yas Marina Circuit and the Emirates Motorsport Organisation (EMSO).

This new format now allows production cars to set official lap records at the famed track.

This includes pre-lap scrutineering to confirm stock status, a 60-minute practice session, and a 45-minute qualifying window.

Packing a 659 PS V8 engine with 850Nm of torque, the Turbo GT means serious business.

It comes with an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), active rear-wheel steering, and those mega Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes.

All of which helped driver Ramez Azzam push the SUV to the limit.

“The power and sound are amazing, but the way it brakes and corners is what really impressed me,” said Azzam.

“For something this big to feel that planted and confident is just crazy.”

He even had one lap disqualified for track limits, as if to demonstrate that this isn’t just a PR stunt.

The latest timing is even faster than Porsche’s previous record set in 2023.

The next time you see a Cayenne Turbo GT in the wild, remember it’s not just an ordinary SUV – it’s the fastest production SUV in the world.

It follows a long tradition of Porsches demolishing their competition, like when the Taycan Turbo GT destroyed Tesla’s electric lap record.

Just remember not to flex your Porsche’s speed outside of the racetrack.

Otherwise, you may end up like these Porsche drivers, who were issued 34 tickets in a single traffic stop.
