The Smart #5 sets a new benchmark for large SUV safety

Earning the Euro NCAP’s ‘Best in Class’ award is no small achievement.

To determine the winner, the organisation calculates a weighted average across four demanding categories: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection, and Safety Assist.

The Smart #5 delivered standout results, scoring 93 percent for Child Occupant Protection and 92 percent for Safety Assist.

This was higher than any vehicle tested across any class in those two categories.

It also posted strong figures of 88 percent for Adult Occupant Protection, and 84 percent for Vulnerable Road User Protection, cementing its all-round credentials.

At the heart of the #5’s success is a body structure designed with safety as a core principle.

The SUV’s steel-aluminum hybrid construction uses 82 percent high-strength materials, creating an exceptionally rigid safety cell.

Seven airbags provide additional peace of mind, while the family-friendly interior allows for up to three child seats in the rear.

Clear markings and wide compatibility make fitting child restraints simple and secure.

One of the #5’s most impressive features is its debut Child Presence Detection system, which uses a millimeter-wave radar to detect even the slightest movement.

This allows the SUV to alert the driver or trigger countermeasures if a child or pet is left inside the vehicle, helping to prevent dangerous situations.

It’s a thoughtful piece of technology that reflects the company’s philosophy of preventing problems before they happen.

That approach continues with an extensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems.

The Smart #5 also has autonomous emergency braking, emergency lane keep assist, and driver monitoring features.

Backed up with a 360-degree camera system, and all these features work together to anticipate risk and protect occupants and other road users alike.

The Smart #5 went through over 110 crash-test vehicles, 130 dedicated safety experiments, and millions of miles of real-world testing.

All of this earned the car the Euro NCAP ‘Best in Class’ title, and proves that SUVs aren’t just stylish, but really safe.
