Smart is best known for its small cars, but it has decided to go in a different direction for its #6 plug-in hybrid saloon.
Smart was founded in 1994 and quickly made a name for itself by producing microcars and subcompacts.
But now, the carmaker has shown it doesn’t just think small.
Its new #6 hybrid saloon is the largest offering we’ve seen from Smart, and it packs in more than 400 horsepower and an impressive range.

Smart is thinking big for its first-ever saloon
Rumors about a bigger vehicle from Smart had been swirling for a while, with most suggesting that the upcoming car would be an EV.
However, the carmaker has managed to surprise everyone by launching what is not only its first-ever saloon but also a hybrid.

The car will run on Smart’s Electric Hybrid Drive system, which combines a 41.46kWh battery with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
That pairing is good for 429 horsepower, and the carmaker says it can do around 177 miles using electric only, and a massive 1,125 miles combined.
For now, details about the car are pretty scarce, but we do know that it’s bigger than both the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C-Class.
While the first-look images shared online show the front of the car has a lightbar over a black grille, there’s a similar lightbar to the rear, alongside a small spoiler.
The bright yellow hybrid has flush ‘hidden’ door handles, and also appears to have a LiDAR sensor mounted onto its roof.
As for the cabin, well, we’ll have to wait and see, because Smart is yet to reveal any images of it, but it’s probably safe to assume it’ll come with the usual sort of tech you’d expect.

Pricing details or a production timeline haven’t been revealed yet, but the #6 is set to only be released into the Chinese market.
It’s not the only new release from the carmaker
News of Smart’s first ever saloon comes after the carmaker unveiled its latest tiny car: the #2.
Yep – the #2.
And, you’ve guessed it, the name reveal caused quite the reaction online.
But, aside from it’s giggle-inducing name, the #2 packs in everything you’d need from an small EV, with a range of roughly 190 miles, fast-charging capabilities, and a surprisingly roomy interior for a car of its pint-sized stature.
