Sonny and Cher were a great music duo, and their matching Mustangs were just as iconic.

Whilst their marriage ultimately came to an end in 1975, their twin cars lived on together.

In fact, the Fords are still being stored together in the Midwest Dream Car Collection.

Whilst people’s tastes may be divided on these cars, there’s no denying that they are a product of their time.

For celebrities, having an impressive car collection is almost a necessity.

We’ve seen a lot of them over the years – from stars as varied as Shaquille O’Neal to Zac Efron.

There are even some celebrity couples who have supercar collections that could rival each other – Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce being just the most prominent example.

We suppose you could say Cher and Sonny were the Taylor and Travis of their day.

They shared a TV show and built a musical career together.

Oh, and they had matching Ford Mustangs.

Cast your minds back to 1965.

Sonny and Cher have just released a major hit song (I’ve Got You Babe), and Ford has sold half a million Pony cars.

Somebody got the idea for the two forces to collaborate.

Thus, Ford gifted the singing duo matching 1966 Mustang convertibles.

George Barris, the ‘King of Kar Kustomization’, was given free rein to make the cars over, GQ reported.

He had good form in Hollywood, having made the Batmobile for the 1960s Batman show and the Munster Koach for The Munsters.

He’d also customized cars for celebrities like Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Zsa Zsa Gabor.

So he seemed like a safe set of hands.

40 layers of paint later, and Cher’s Mustang was Hot Candy Pink, whilst Sonny’s was Murano Gold.

Other additional details included rectangular headlights and metal grilles on the bonnet.

And if you thought the exteriors were classic 1960s, just wait until you take a look at the inside.

Cher’s seats were a combo of ermine fur and leather, whilst Sonny’s were shaggy bobcat fur and suede.

How can something sound so wrong, yet feel so right?

In an odd touch, the drivers’ seats were swivel chairs.

It’s not entirely clear whether these cars got much action with their celebrity owners.

But the good news is that they’re still together, owned by collector Ward Morgan and on display at Midwest Dream Car Collection in Kansas City.

Do you believe in life after love?

We do, but we’re not so sure about life after losing out on a groovy set of Mustangs like these.
