The upcoming iPhone iOS update, 17.4, is set to change the way Apple owners use their iPhones.

If rumors are to be believed, it’ll entail a lot more than some new emojis and minor tweaks.

In essence, the new iOS is forcing Apple to change its modus operandi and be a bit more ‘open’.

Apple’s policy is famously (or notoriously) strict, with an our-way-or-the-highway approach to what you can or can’t do with their products.

This is because Apple prioritizes the ecosystem and the company believes that users don’t just want ‘better’ – they want ‘seamless’.

However, the new iOS update will give Apple users options they don’t have at the moment, and this’ll happen chiefly because the EU told Apple they must comply if they want to keep selling products in the region.

This is essentially the same reason why the company was forced to finally give up on Lightning to replace it with the USB-C.

For starters, it’ll be a lot easier to change your default internet browser from Safari to whatever else you might want to use.

Furthermore, it’ll force Apple to allow apps to offer third-party subscriptions without taking such a huge cut of the money.

This is a bit of a recurring theme with Apple, and it often flies under the radar.

For example, this is a little known fact, Google pays Apple a whopping 36 percent fee to be the default search engine on Safari.

Speaking of third-party apps, they will finally become available from the App Store, something that is known in the industry as ‘sideloading‘.

It remains to be seen whether this will impact Apple’s market dominance.

In 2023, six of the 10 best-selling smartphones were made by Apple (the other four by Samsung).

What’s even more impressive is Apple occupies the top four spots on the list.

We’ll find out more when the new upgrade releases, in March 2024.
