This Tesla Model Y Performance driver shared his charging experience, and the cost may take you by surprise.
It’s no secret that home charging costs have risen, and with the current climate, some owners have been less than impressed with electricity bills.
After the number of free charging stations decreased, one Tesla Model Y owner decided to figure out a way to make charging free at home.
It was touch-and-go, but after creating a clever system, his Tesla can increase its battery for a pretty admirable price.

Charging EVs can be expensive
These days, the classic gas car versus electric vehicle debate is more prevalent than ever, with more people opting for EVs.
Electric vehicles, such as the Tesla Model Y Performance, generally cost less to charge and run than gas cars, but charging can still cost money.

Stopping at charging points and using Superchargers can turn into an expensive habit, plus charging at home can cause electricity bills to rise.
One man revealed over on The Driven that there is a way to make charging cost nothing, and managed to charge his Tesla Model Y Performance for a total of 0 dollars.

This Tesla Model Y Performance costs nothing at his home
Let us set the scene: a Tesla Model Y Performance can be charged both at home and in public.
So, in light of at-home charging, one owner decided to install solar panels and a battery system to keep costs down.
By using the solar system and battery, his electricity bill dropped from about $2,600 a year to about $750. He also opted to use Virtual Power Plants, which lowered costs even further.
Luckily, he was also surrounded by free public stations, which also kept charging costs low, but as EV production multiplied, they started to disappear, so he had to think of a new plan, fast.
With at-home costs rising, the Tesla Model Y Performance owner decided to switch to a new electricity retailer that offered a flat rate per month plus a daily grid connection, followed by National Energy Market wholesale tariffs.

The savvy owner has managed to keep costs super low by using his own clever software after discovering a loophole with the Sonnen battery.
It was trial and error until he found an add-on to help work out a plan to keep the system in check, and at first, his bills skyrocketed.
Finally, he conjured up a system that provided charging optimization through projected forecasted electricity prices and solar output.
It’s thanks to this clever optimization and forecasted charging that he has been able to charge his Tesla Model Y Performance for nothing, with his account even being in credit.
This smart charging technique proves that being savvy and shopping around can benefit EV owners in the long run, and adds further fuel to the fire that EVs are more financially viable than gas cars.
