This Toyota 4Runner was stuck in an off-road spot and one man had the chance to win it – if he could free it himself.
YouTube channel, Donut, presented this challenge to one of their 8 million subscribers – a man called Randall.
It was Randall’s job to recover the 1999 4Runner, which had been deliberately sabotaged by the Donut crew.
As if that didn’t sound daunting enough, he had only two hours to get the job done.

Getting a Toyota 4Runner out of a sticky situation
In usual circumstances, the 4Runner would be a pretty formidable truck – even when compared to heavy hitters like the Land Cruiser.
But for the sake of this challenge, it’s been left lopsided in a ditch in the Californian wilderness.
The truck had been damaged in some very specific ways, to replicate common problems faced by trucks that off-road.
Not only did Randall have to fix them, but he also had to drive the Toyota over a designated finish line.
There was a lot of work to be done, and no time to waste.
Using tools in the trunk, Randall got started working on the front axle, part of which had broken off.
Given that the truck was stuck in an uneven part of the road, he opted to use a winch to attempt to pull it out.
With no other vehicle on hand to tow him out, he opted to use a land anchor instead.
The land anchor is essentially what you’d imagine it to be – it digs into the ground and can pull a car if done correctly.
However, he had no such luck this time, as he accidentally broke the anchor whilst hammering it into the ground.
Time for a plan B.
Randall started letting air out of the tires, which one of the hosts commended him for.
The host said: “It’s going to give him a bigger contact patch once he reduces the pressure on the tire, which should get him more traction.
“It’s probably going to pay off eventually, but he’s going to have to get off that axle.
“The rear axle is beached, it’s sitting on the ground, it’s really holding him up.”
Randall then proceeded to disconnect the sway bar end-links, to get himself more travel in the rear.
With rocks piled up in front of the back tires, it’s hoped that this time around, the plan will pay off.
No such luck is forthcoming, however – just a lot of smoke and tire spinning.
Randall lamented: “The axle is stuck on the dirt, not looking forward to all the digging that might have to come.”
With only 98 minutes on the clock, time was ticking.
Challenges in normal circumstances are stressful enough – like fixing up this totaled Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye – but timed conditions just up the pressure to 100.
Will Randall emerge victorious – or will he be stuck at the side of the road?
At this point, the Donut team offered him the use of their ‘Low Truck’ to help get himself towed out of the ditch.
This came with a 10-minute penalty, but Randall accepted their offer.
The winch prevails and the Toyota is back on solid ground.
Now it was time to get additional car repairs done.
Randall fixed a deflated tire with the help of a flammable substance.
One of Donut’s hosts explained the process: “The tire has completely deflated from the wheel.
“So in order to inflate it, it needs to make contact with the outside of the rim.
“We’re going to use a combustible to expand [the tire] out, make contact, seal it, and then we can inflate the tire from there.”
After a bit of trial and error – or tire and error, you might say – the wheel was back in working order.
And nobody got burnt in the process.
Randall, who works in mechanics, replaced the broken front axle and fixed a broken tie rod with virtually no guidance from the Donut crew.
By the time he got the job done, he had seven minutes left to get the truck over the finish line.
Given that this challenge was taking place out in the California wilderness, there was still every risk that something could get broken in the final push.
Fortunately, he emerged victorious – and with a Toyota 4Runner to his name.
Nothing quite like getting a free car, is there?
Leaving aside the fact Randall paid in sweat and effort.
Yet and still, it’s a great feeling – and one this man knew all too well when his millionaire business partner bestowed a brand new Porsche on him.
