This is the terrifying moment a truck’s brakes fail, sending it hurtling down a busy mountain road.

The heart-stopping drive was captured on the truck’s dash cam as it made its way down a steep road in Mt Victoria, New South Wales, Australia

In the video, the driver of the 40-tonne truck can be heard blaring the horn to warn other drivers as he races down the winding road.

The video shows a lineup of cars and caravans in front of the truck.

The two cars immediately ahead of it appear to understand the seriousness of the situation and cross to the wrong side of the road to get out of the way.

The truck then moves as far to the side of the road as possible to avoid hitting a car towing a caravan.

The caravan driver tries to move as far over as they can, but with traffic now coming in the opposite direction, there’s little space to move.

With the truck still blaring its horn and the driver swearing behind the wheel, the cars turn a corner and there’s finally a glimmer of hope.

A side road appears to the left and the driver swings his truck into it.

Then a safety ramp designed for this very situation appears and the truck pulls onto it.

This brings the truck to a slow stop, but the driver’s not out of the woods yet.

Instead of stopping, the truck starts to roll backward and towards the road again.

After rolling back down the ramp the truck finally comes to a stop.

When the dashcam footage was posted to the Dash Cam Owners Australia group, people praised the driver for his handling of the situation.

“My heart was racing watching it, so I can only imagine how you felt living it,” one woman said.

“How you kept the truck on the road and not colliding with the embankment despite the van driver is astounding.”
