These unusual road features often become landmarks in their own right, sparking debate, admiration, or fear among drivers.
Roads aren’t always just about getting from A to B – some are built to amaze, challenge, or completely baffle the people who use them.
Around the globe, you’ll find intersections that look like puzzles, bridges that vanish into the water, and tunnels that push the limits of engineering.
From the UK’s wildest roundabout to China’s record-breaking sea crossings, here are eight of the most remarkable examples.

1. Unusual road features: bonkers roundabouts – Swindon (UK)
Five mini-roundabouts arranged in a circle create a traffic ballet that forces vehicles to flow both clockwise and counterclockwise. It’s part genius, part chaos – and a rite of passage for UK drivers.

2. Diamond-shaped ‘roundabout’ – Sydney (Australia)
It looks nothing like a roundabout and works nothing like one either. This diamond-shaped junction has been baffling local drivers since the day it opened.

3. Unusual road features: left intersections – Michigan (USA)
Banning direct left turns, these intersections force a right turn followed by a U-turn. They’ve been shown to dramatically cut crash rates – if you can get used to them.

4. Huajiang Canyon Bridge – Guizhou (China)
The highest bridge in the world, it connects cliff faces across a gorge so deep it turns a 70-minute drive into a one-minute glide.

5. Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel – Virginia (USA)
At first it looks like the road just ends in the river – but the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel actually dives underwater so huge ships can pass above.

6. Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link – Pearl River Delta (China)
Stretching 49.7 km, this is the longest combined bridge-tunnel crossing in the world – and it broke 10 world records when it opened.

7. Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge – Macau (Hong Kong)
Known as the ‘ghost bridge’, this is the longest sea-crossing bridge on Earth. It once saw low traffic due to strict permit rules, but remains a marvel of design.

8. Unusual road features: Rogfast Tunnel – Stavanger (Norway)
When complete, this almost 17-mile undersea tunnel will host the world’s deepest road junction – 1,279ft below sea level.

Whether they inspire awe, confusion, or a racing pulse, these roads prove the journey can be just as unforgettable as the destination.
