iPhone users, listen up, as the niggling question of why there are two different screens when you pick up a call has finally been answered.
It turns out that there’s a simple explanation for the feature that benefits you more than you’d think.
It all stems from the days of cell phones with no touchscreens.
And, the feature has actually been used by Apple for many years in more ways than one.

To answer or not answer, that is the question
Getting a call at the wrong time can be infuriating, especially when you can’t actually decline the call on screen.
However, if you have an iPhone, it turns out that there’s a reason behind this.
One tech whizz over on the Apple Explained YouTube channel broke down the need for the two options of screens when receiving an incoming call, and it’s simpler than you’d imagine.

It’s all to do with keeping you safe and sound from accidentally calling people in your pocket or in your bag, as the phone’s display uses a touchscreen.
If the phone is unlocked, it will display the option to take or actively decline the call, with two buttons to carry out either desired action.
But if the phone is locked, the slide to answer option will be enabled instead to save you from accidentally answering or declining the call.

For those wanting to decline a call when their iPhone is locked, you can simply press the side button twice, quickly, according to Apple itself.
The iPhone feature is actually a gift from Apple’s past
For those of us who have been loving iPhones for much longer than the latest iPhone 17 release, the slide feature is no fly-by-night gimmick.
If you remember correctly, the first iPhone had a home button and ‘slide to unlock’.
So, really, the feature has always been at Apple’s core, but utilized in more high-tech ways as different models and operating systems have been developed.
An old iOS operating system also only had one screen with a decline or answer option, until the company switched things up.
So, there you have it.
The reason we get the slide to answer feature when the iPhone is locked is to save you from missing important calls.
Hey, at least butt dialing is a thing of the past, thanks to the genius minds at Apple.
