‘Electric cars are not the future. Hydrogen cars will be,’ is a hypothesis that this YouTube personality and EV expert is posed with on a regular occasion.
So, to put it to the test, he stepped inside the Toyota Mirai to see if it’s the real deal, as the automobile industry starts to wrap its bonnet around the whole concept of electric vehicles.
But with plans to make all new cars at least somewhat powered by electric motors by the turn of the decade, are we actually focusing our attention on the right area?
Or, should the car industry be splitting its eggs between the EV and hydrogen basket, to ensure we’re finding the best solution to cutting our carbon wheelprint?

Is the Toyota Mirai proving that EVs are a waste of time?
Meaning ‘future’ in its native Japanese tongue, the Toyota Mirai is the leading car that takes advantage of new hydrogen power units.
We described the car as ‘comfortable, very smooth, and quite nippy’ in our own review.
But after being told that hydrogen cars will replace EVs, YouTube car expert The MacMaster has now put the Toyota Mirai to the test.
In an upload to his channel, the man took it for a drive alongside a Toyota Mirai owner, getting the low-down on what makes them so good, and why they’re different from his own EVs.

After first learning that the car acts as an EV, working off electric motors just with hydrogen cells powering them, he soon found that the Mirai takes just five minutes to charge and can run for up to 400 miles.
“How long does it take to fill one of these? About five minutes. That’s where it’s ahead already of electric cars,” the YouTuber said.
But it’s also a really great drive.
“It’s smooth. It’s quiet. It feels well. Suspension’s nice. It’s a beautiful car to drive.
“That car drove brilliantly. I’d have one tomorrow.”
But there are some drawbacks.
What’s holding hydrogen cars back?
Just as others have found out, the infrastructure for hydrogen cars is very, very bad.
Despite being on the road for a few years now, the charging stations remain scarce.
In the UK, The MacMaster pointed out that there are fewer than 10 hydrogen refueling stations.
While electric infrastructure is being built upon every single day, hydrogen pumps are costly and are very few and far between, which makes owning something like the Toyota Mirai quite challenging.

In the verdict, the YouTuber revealed that he was seriously ‘impressed’ by hydrogen cars, but with the fuel so hard to come by, it might always be eclipsed by EVs that beat it to the punch.
