After years of waiting, the long-promised Mercedes-AMG One is finally here – a car that truly brings F1 tech to the road.

Although meant to hit the roads in 2021, technical delays have stopped it from happening until now.

That’s perhaps not surprising as the One, originally called the Mercedes Project One, is powered by the 1.6-liter turbo V6 Mercedes uses in Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 car.

Trying to make the engine work in a road car was a massive challenge.

F1 cars don’t need to meet noise and emissions regulations, or work in traffic.

Such were the challenges, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius even joked to investors last month: “I’m sure we were drunk when we said yes”.

But Mercedes-AMG has somehow managed to make it work.

The F1 engine makes a whopping 1063hp (782kW) alongside a plug-in hybrid system.

Oh, and the engine can still rev to an insane 11,000rpm.

Top speed and acceleration times, while impressive, aren’t really the focus of the Mercedes-AMG One.

Instead, it was built to dominate racetracks, in the same way, the F1 car it draws upon is.

After all, there are already hypercars that can beat the top speed of an F1 car in a straight line.

The design of the Mercedes-AMG One

The Mercedes-AMG One will look at home on the streets of Monaco with its purposeful and aerodynamic styling.

The F1 influence is clear inside with a rectangular steering wheel covered in buttons.

And the standard Mercedes tech is still there as well.

Just 275 examples of the One will be made.

They are all sold already.
