Benzema winning the Ballon d'Or

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema won the Ballon d’Or for the first time in his career.

That’s awesome yes, but we need to take a moment to talk about the $500,000 rose gold Richard Mille Benzema was wearing as fellow Frenchman and football legend Zinedine Zidane presented him with the award.

Now, the Richard Mille RM 65-01 he was wearing retails for $310,000.

But we’re all familiar with the brand and we know these timepieces are usually nigh on impossible to get.

This is why this particular model is worth about half a million dollars in the secondary market.

Having said that, Benzema earns $325,000 per week at Real Madrid so it’s probably no big deal for him.

Why is this watch so expensive?

Well, the short and simple answer is: it’s a Richard Mille.

The company is extremely good at marketing and can count on a squad of high-profile brand ambassadors.

From Rafael Nadal to Felipe Massa and Margot Robbie.

In addition to that, the brand is known for its crazy attention to detail.

Literally every single component of a Richard Mille watch is made in-house – including the screws and bolts.

By the way, Supercar Blondie’s Alex Hirschi has an RM in her collection, check it out here:

Karim Benzema paired the watch with an amazing Fendi outfit inspired by the one that rap icon Tupac Shakur once wore.

And we all know the internet never sleeps so users took to Twitter to share their comments and opinions.

Soccer news outlet ‘Goal’ shared a tweet with a caption that read: “Karim Benzema came through in the Tupac drip.”

Another user commented: “Benzema rocking the Tupac Look is the coldest photo tonight # Ballon d’Or “.

Other people pointed out the juxtaposition between Benzema’s $500k Richard Mille and Robert Lewandowski’s $60 Casio.

And by the way, Robert Lewandowski is still salty about what happened a couple of years ago.

He was favored to win the 2020 Ballon d’Or but the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the pandemic.

That’s why, right before this year’s ceremony started, Lewandowski took a dig at France Football, the magazine that hosts and organizes the Ballon d’Or.

He told a reporter: “[Benzema] is one of the favorites to win the Ballon d’Or… if they don’t cancel it.”

Ouch.
