Pravaig Defy

You wouldn’t be mistaken for thinking the rendered image is of another Range Rover model – but it’s actually the Pravaig Defy.

The Defy is a premium electric SUV recently revealed by Pravaig, an Indian start-up.

To be honest, we’d never heard of Pravaig before, but a quick internet search tells us that the company was founded back in 2011.

According to Siddharta Bagri, CEO of Pravaig, the company has invested $18 million in the development of the SUV.

The start-up also announced it will invest a further $30 million over the next five months prior to the car’s market launch.

Images show a pre-production prototype of the Defy – the company’s first model – which is scheduled to enter production in the second quarter of 2023.

Interestingly, the Pravaig Defy is priced from Rs 39.5 lakh in India – that’s a mere $48,440.

Pravaig Defy performance

So what can we expect from the low-cost electric SUV?

To start with, it sits on an in-house developed EV-dedicated architecture, which features dual electric motors.

Those electric motors produce a combined 402 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque.

It’s got an all-wheel drive system that Pravaig claims will help the Defy to accelerate from 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 210km/h (130 mph).

The EV has a 90.9-kWh battery that’s good for a driving range of more than 500km (311 miles).

It has the ability to charge from 0-80% in 30 minutes using an ultra-fast charger, too.

Design

At 4.96m (195.3 inches) in length, the Defy is quite boxy in appearance,

Its flat glass surfaces and angular roofline don’t really help with that.

Its profile, glasshouse, and rear are all very reminiscent of the Range Rover Velar.

The interior, on the other hand, appears to be more premium than the exterior.

Vegan leather and sustainable fabrics have been used for the upholstery.

The dashboard is dominated by a 15.6″ touchscreen mated to a premium audio system from French brand, Devialet.

We’re not quite sure that – for only $48k – the Pravaig Defy is a genuine contender against other established automakers’ premium SUVs.
