One thing Dubai isn’t short of is bling.

From the buildings to the cars, all that glitters is gold in the middle-eastern city.

So much so, that even the currency is now gold-plated.

You read that right: you can now get your hands on a 24-karat gold note in Dubai.

Although it can’t be used as money, it does feel pretty special strutting around with a 24-karat wad of notes.

Hardly surprising, considering Dubai is the playground of the rich and famous, like Asia’s wealthiest family, who were filmed driving an unbelievable 20-car convoy through the city.

A SIM card with a unique phone number recently sold for an eye-watering amount at an event in Dubai.

The 24-karat gold note was created by Dian Jewellery, in collaboration with Finmet DMCC and Valaurum.

The souvenir pays homage to the Emirate’s love for metal, along with featuring Dubai’s iconic skyline and notable landmarks.

Apparently, each note contains 0.1 grams of 24-karat gold on the inside.

“We are thrilled to introduce Dubai’s first-ever 24K gold note souvenir, a testament to our dedication to innovation and our rich heritage of gold craftsmanship,” Dian Jewellery founder, Rahul Sagar said.

“Our goal is to celebrate Dubai’s splendor while offering a timeless keepsake for residents and visitors,” he added.

Just like real money, the 24-karat gold note is distinguished by a unique serial number, while also coming with a commemorative cover.

“What makes it unique is the fact that through this patented process, we’re able to capture real 24k gold in a flexible note, and the gold can actually be recovered,” the founder explained.

“Upon professional fire assay, you can actually recover the 0.1g of 24k gold from the note, whereas gold-plated items or notes are dipped into a solution that has a very small content of gold and this gold fades off and can’t be recovered even if it is melted.”

The 24-karat gold note is priced at AED 159 ($43) per piece and can be purchased from Dian Jewellery and Shantilal Jewellers (SCS) in Dubai’s Gold Souk.
